ok so here's how that went. I was late night at a certain small Bahnhof and I hat to wait 25min for the bus outside and it was way too fucking cold, so I put on all my layers and stayed inside. thanks to anti-homeless hate architeture there's no place to sit in German stations that's not exposed to the cold, so I found myselves a dark corner to lean against, pulled out my crochet, and started crocheting while standing.
after a while I felt eyes on me and, being kinda on the edge after having endured my usual share of nazis & assholes that pop up on public transport, I tried to ignore it to see if the problem solved itself. the touch of eyesight continued to pressure against me so I looked up, expecting to see another skinhead or something. but no, it was some sweet german grandma smiling. this was so disorienting that I lost my bearing for a few seconds. Germans don't simply smile at you wtf.
suddenly embarassed like a little girl, I said something like, ich muss n' bisschen warten, and she was like, ja und du wirst denn die Zeit gut nutzen! with like some enthusiasm?? even more embarrassed I said like, na ja das macht spaß, and she like agreed warmly and said goodbye and went to catch her train.
so afterwards later I was crocheting in the train and another kind German grandma asked about my crochet. I didn't quite catch her question but by context I deduced that she was probably asking what was it that I was making (this weird tube like a single glove finger that's overly long), so I said it was a cover for my flute, and I pulled out my flute to help explain. and she was like oh it's coming out really good, and I was like, ach ich lerne noch ich bin anfängerin, and Reader, what happened next is that she picked up my crochet and examined it critically while saying like oh but this ist gut! gut gemacht!!
all that I ever wanted was some strict grandma who learned crochet 60 years ago in a very demanding culture that had expectations for the tension control of your stitches to look at my handiwork and say something approvingly, and then this just like, manifested?!?!
she said like but that's a great idea, this way you're never bored. I repeated the line about how it macht Spaß, but I didn't expect this to be like, such a topic. I have seen women knitting or crocheting in trains before and nobody seemed to take much notice—hell I often practice my flute at train stations or bus stops and I'm super sure that's way more of an unusual thing to do, and nobody ever said anything. with this lady and the previous one too, I get this sense that they were like, happy to see a young woman (from their point of view) doing a craft that's been a part of their lives?!?
and then like it kinda doesn't seem to matter that I have my antifa tattoos or was in a hoodie or wearing tactical bags or in a dark place or have a transgender voice, etc.; all of that seemed to become secondary to sharp eyes attentively following the movement of my fingers and recognising it like, oh that's the thing! I know this thing it's my thing, she's just like me fr. (I imagine.)
and then she said like that she hoped she was home soon because it's so dang cold, and internally I was like :O, because do you know how often it is that Germans talk to you about the weather on public transport. I've been here for 9 years and I don't remember this happening a single time before today. so when she left the bus I told her to kommt gut nach Hause, and she was like du auch, and I'm like so ready for this I'll befriend all the German grandmas now lol
