The Wayback Machine risks becoming collateral damage in the fight against AI, writes Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle in The Atlantic.

Blocking the Internet Archive won’t stop AI companies from scraping the web. But it can undermine a vital resource for journalists, researchers, and anyone seeking information that has disappeared or changed.

Seize the means of production..

The simplest way to tax billionaires is to appropriate the businesses they own. Nationalizing the fossil fuel industry would create a mechanism to wind down its operations. Industries like healthcare and education should be public. Amazon should be a national service. Internet access should be a public utility.

Wildfire is a complex ecological and social phenomenon. Our latest issue explores it from multiple perspectives, and I think this kind of holistic interpretation is critical to fully grapple with the issue; as catastrophic wildfires will assuredly continue into the foreseeable future.

Monsterdon getting criminally disrespected here

@libreoffice, you disappointed me.

Of all the current Open Source projects, I respected you the most. I thought you were one of very few projects that other projects should actually mimic. I thought you were the good guys.

Every single week (nearly every single day), I'm disappointed by yet another project that I thought was going to "buck the trend" and not fall for the AI bullshit. I'm not sure what I was thinking and I'm angry at myself for wasting so much time being hopeful.

LibreOffice, I don't make much money and struggle to make ends meet working three part-time jobs. But I was preparing to donate to you because I trusted you and I had so much respect for the project. So much for that.

Everything is going to hell because of AI and the people involved don't seem to care.

Tech is so close to being dead to me. I'm trying other things just to keep the spark going after nearly 30+ years. Hell, close to 40 years, now. But I'm struggling. It's just not fun anymore.

I’ve said it before, but this really might be our best issue yet

Seems like a great night for an 80s #horror binge

We had a nice hike along Hemlock Lake (one of the #FingerLakes) this afternoon. Gorgeous day.

There are few things that so perfectly represent the capitalist mode of production as generative AI. It’s theft. It’s plagiarism. It’s an attack on labor. It destroys the environment. It produces junk. It’s harmful to consume. It concentrates wealth. In short, it’s a catastrophe for society.

El Niño is everywhere in the headlines, but ultimately human-caused climate change is the key reason for the record global warmth. 📈

Regular reminder to join a union. Especially if you're in tech and you think you don't really need to.

But also: a union is not a magic machine were you put money in on one side and a better world comes out on the other side. It's not a service provider for delivering fairness.

Unionising and organising first and foremost mean doing things together, not individually. Supporting each other and being active for our common goals. And that means people doing stuff.
