Debian Linux trekt over het land!

RE: https://glammr.us/@jessamyn/117487748124291597

Everyone that works for a Silicon Valley company should have to read Jessamyn’s field reports of people trying to use their devices, then think about their own product quality, then make appropriate changes.

Philomena: Some people have been writing PHP for over 20 years. Is that because it's particularly difficult to finish?

Expert: No, software is constantly evolving.

Philomena: So they've been writing the same website for 20 years?

Expert: No, different projects.

Philomena: Have they tried finishing one before starting another?

Expert: That's not how software development works.

Philomena: My mate Paul spent 20 years building a shed. Turned out he was just an alcoholic.

Expert: Right.

Philomena: Is PHP like that?

Regular reminder to join a union. Especially if you're in tech and you think you don't really need to.

But also: a union is not a magic machine were you put money in on one side and a better world comes out on the other side. It's not a service provider for delivering fairness.

Unionising and organising first and foremost mean doing things together, not individually. Supporting each other and being active for our common goals. And that means people doing stuff.

Well today's gonna be an interesting day for sysadmins haha, guess I'll sit back with my popcorn and SHIT I'M A SYSADMIN

Right, I'm finally at a desk, I am sleep deprived and have just travelled halfway across the continent: people dealing with this #PHP shit, what should those of us who aren't sysadmin types but are running PHP sites on shared hosting from big vendors do?

I'm seeing a lot of "take your website offline" but that's not actually very helpful without clarification - does that mean "put it into maintenance mode" or "scrub everything off the server" or somewhere in between?

Being the IT security person that I am, I made the file path unreadable

someone should invent a search engine where if you put in two keywords it finds pages that have both the keywords

@acdha

but the meter works, so...

O Sysadmin, O Sysadmin
How weary are your fingers
O Sysadmin, O Sysadmin
The unpatched version lingers

A compromise
A CVE
Now a CA
Now PHP

O Sysadmin, O Sysadmin
How weary are your fingers

Here is a big ❤️ to all admins now fixing the internet.

Most people won't notice, but we know you are there!

Here #DigitalHumanities:
Do you know of databases that make good use of EDTF?
https://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime/

I'm asking because afaik EDTF is great for encoding and displaying complex date stuff.
But not useful for doing any kind of calculation (that needs additional parser I haven't seen 'in use' yet).

This last part severely diminishes its usefulness & I hoped there are some projects around that implemented parser etc...

Bitte denkt dran, ein Schälchen Wasser für die Admins rauszustellen.

Fyi, if you have a risky patch, deploy, infra change, today's the day to do it. You can pretty much get away with anything. Don't waste this opportunity.

The dumbest person you know is being told "You're absolutely right" by ChatGPT right now.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are putting our services in maintenance mode until we update to the latest PHP version.
