Legend has it that there's going to be a robust tech-in-journalism track at Atmosphere 27. A community of hundreds of the most cutting-edge builders and thinkers on the internet will be there. You should probably apply to speak and share your work. Yes, you. https://atmosphereconf.org/speak
Holy wow. 25% of Microsoft. https://www.theverge.com/tech/1018666/microsoft-expands-buyouts-60000-employees-eligible
I wish I could hit a button that says "hey, I voted already" and everyone would stop sending me text messages. I did. I voted. I probably voted for the people and causes you're texting me about. Please stop. For the love of all that is holy. End the madness.
This year, solar will represent 10% of power generation. Abundant, clean energy is great news - but there's more work to do to make sure every community benefits. #Technology https://werd.io/solar-is-offensively-cheap-to-live-up-to-its-promise-it-also-needs-to-be-equitable/

Truly. The people who want to take an "eternal September" attitude to the influx of people to the open social web are not helping the cause in any way. Don't do it.
Every week I gather notable links and articles that I think are worth discussing. Today's roundup includes: two important reports about AI in the newsroom, how technology can get in the way of our relationships at work, and thoughts on the end of Foursquare. https://werd.io/notable-links-september-23-2026/
If you’re mourning Arc browser, Zen is fantastic: https://werd.io/why-im-all-in-on-zen-browser/
"News will be intermediated by AI, whether we like it or not." The solution will involve common infrastructure, open technology, data portability, and fighting against lock-in at all costs. #AI https://werd.io/news-will-be-intermediated-by-ai-whats-next/
This PHP exploit is an example of how and why most people should not be administering their own server, and I specifically do not want to be. (I do run a server and have patched it.) Applying patches and watching security advisories is just not what I want to be doing with my days.
We drive to daycare these days. Child chooses the music. He loves Crazy Frog. Today, in an effort to change his tastes, I try him on the classics: Boogie Boogie Hedgehog, Badger Badger Badger. Eventually we stop at a light. He’s looking at me like I have fully cracked. Sheepishly, I play Crazy Frog.
Artificial intelligence: technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy.
Super intelligence: comes with sour cream and guacamole.
I’m taking my weekly class from Bill Burnett at the Stanford d.school today. I love it. One of the highlights of my week.
What are you excited about today?
"When people see AI as a more competent, trustworthy, and preferable source of input than a colleague, they replace human interactions that otherwise would have built or maintained trust." And teams suffer for it. #AI https://werd.io/ai-can-weaken-relationships-between-people-and-teams-suffer-as-a-result/
Foursquare has come to an end at the hands of private equity. It was a fun service that led to really great real-world experiences - but what happens to those check-ins now? #Technology https://werd.io/foursquare-died-at-the-hands-of-private-equity-what-happens-next/
This is a landmark study in AI use in newsrooms. It reveals that newsrooms rarely experiment with their business models without outside help. #AI https://werd.io/a-landmark-study-of-ai-in-newsrooms-reveals-they-need-to-be-coaxed-to-experiment-with-their-business-models/
I sat down with @wearenew_public to chat about the open social web, news, and what I think is important when you’re building something that serves a community: https://newpublic.substack.com/p/why-this-platform-is-for-everyone
I understand the need for paywalls overall, but I don’t love voter guides being behind them in particular. They feel core to the public service local newsrooms provide: the benefit to local democracy should outweigh commercial considerations. But am I wrong?

Btw: the same is true for journalism events and projects.
