screenshots of #CHI websites from 1995 to 2027 - a 🧵
Screenshots were taken on a 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021, macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1) using Firefox 158.0.1 (aarch64) in full-screen mode (3600x2034) and iPhone 17 simulation (i.e., responsive design mode).
Interesting paper: People were asked to do a programming task that involved the use of a new library. Half had AI support, half didn't. People who used AI were not significantly faster, but they learned significantly less, on average, as measured by an extensive post-task quiz.
The neat bit is that the authors analyzed the strategies that people employed when using AI. There were 3 strategies that people chose for themselves that did support learning.

I wonder if AI-first tech companies working in traditional areas get classified as "tech" -- seems like there are a bunch of medical/lawyer/etc companies doing alright
Hello Mastodon. I made a thing https://edjefferson.com/localwiki/
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

It's a weird feeling that there are now several members at inference.coop using the service more than I am. It feels kinda like when I built a checkers bot in college that could beat me. Spooky. But this time it's humans, coming into community together.

Theoretical computer scientists, including Pravesh Kothari, used AI to find an important solution to an open math problem.
They documented their process and concluded that while AI excels at finding answers, it is not yet good at building theories.
