'The EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework opens once every seven years. The Irish presidency has put its figures on the table and EU leaders meet on 15 October to debate them. Member states are pushing to settle the budget by the end of the year. That means that whatever digital enforcement capacity the EU has for the next decade could be decided over the coming weeks – in rooms where almost nobody is discussing enforcement.'

In-depth article by Linux Magazine on the Fediverse with interviews with Ivan and Mayel from @Bonfire and @cwebber

A good read to share

- About the Open Science Network, the archipielago set-up and the Jacobin.de case (all Bonfire)

- About the ActivityPub standard with federation between servers and client-server with the apps

- About living systems that are brought in by sensor networks about which the neighbours can have conversations.

- About solidarity networks. Such as @coopcloud – a community first and a set of
deployment tools and recipes second - of which Bonfire and also the #DemocraticTechFund are members

- Also about how #VentureCapital money typically results in shiny but extractive businesses that turn into an #enshittification process to return maximum profit to shareholders. Instead we can have networks of community centred ventures and cooperative platforms, such as @SocialCoop. And public funding channeled through e.g. @nlnet

"Social media algorithms amplify right-wing content against young users’ preference"

https://www.bi.team/press-releases/social-media-algorithms-amplify-right-wing-content-against-young-users-preference-study-finds/

I finally re-found this study I read a few months ago, that deserves a lot more attention. It is, in fact, the main reason we should be moving away from big-tech social media: it shows more right-wing content than left-wing content, no matter the political leaning of the user.

Propaganda works. See more of something and you start believing it. And they know it.

Bizarre: Data centres have a total of 15 GW (15,000 MW) in queue for electricity connections in the Netherlands, grid operators just disclosed. That's roughly the current average national power use!

Dutch bank ABN Amro (one of the big 3) is at risk of being hit by US sanctions, because of services it provides to the ICC.

Worst case scenario ABN AMRO would be excluded from the international banking system, which would be the "corporate death penalty" and has already caused another bank, the Amsterdam Trade Bank, to go under.

The Trump regime continues its battle against collective communication infra that is not under corporate control.

Even after A/I dismantling they ordered the Dutch to seize a server in Amsterdam. Of course the NL police cooperated, completely unaware of the changed int'l relations.

What about #DigitalAutonomy? Or even the much proclaimed goal of #TechSovereignty ?

It appears to me that we must fight back and build our own collective infra. Nobody else is going to do it for you.

Today the @NRC reports that the Dutch police confiscated a server allegedly used by the Italian antifascist network #autisticiinventati

The Dutch police acted upon a request from the US government.

The server was hosted in a data center right next to our university building.

It is hard to overestimate the political significance of this intervention.

#DigitalSovereignty was never more important.

Pool money for democratic tech!

@bartgroothuis @AstaMcCarthy @johan @BjornW

🔺 NEW INVESTIGATION: When the EU fined Elon Musk's X €120 million, Trump, Musk and a US ultraconservative Christian legal group closed ranks. All three were already campaigning against EU platform regulation, and they work together in many ways.

We mapped it. We call it the Triangle of Madness.

🧵👇

The central result is a “Wheel of Contributions”: Pledge → Contribution → Recognition → Participation. Partners commit, contribute, get recognised for what they bring, and gain a real voice in co-governance, with clearer partner roles and a dedicated participation space (working name: Co.Consul).

What I appreciate most is that the team looked honestly at its own model, and then took it to its partners at ConsulCon instead of keeping it internal. That is how a commons gets built: with the community, in the open.

Thank you to the whole CDF team and Board for the trust and the pleasant collaboration so far. Looking forward to seeing the next steps unfold! @consuldemocracy

Consul started in 2015 at Madrid City Council and is now used by 140+ cities and organisations. The question we worked on: how do you turn a widely used piece of #civictech into a true #commons, where more of the people who benefit also contribute and help steer?

In three online sessions in July we:

- used the Five Pillar framework for commons sustainability to map where CDF stands today
- compared notes with other open source and commons projects, including PublicSpaces in the Netherlands
- sketched where the Foundation wants to grow

This summer I had the pleasure of accompanying the Consul Democracy Foundation (CDF) team in a reflection on their governance and sustainability model. They’ve now published the story of that journey, and I’m honoured by how thoughtfully they’ve documented it: https://consuldemocracy.org/2026/09/towards-a-digital-commons-improving-our-governance-model/

"Culture used to be a river. Broadcast platforms and public feeds carried ideas wide and fast. Today the river is splintering into streams, tributaries, and hidden pools."

This article by Brad Davidson is a brilliant insight into the shift away from algorithmic feeds towards small sanctuaries, highlighting the craving for social in our social media consumption.

The paradox of local events:

On one hand, local organisms spend precious time keeping up on social media.

On the other hand, individuals scroll for hours although it feels like a waste of time.

What if we could meetup without being manipulated by algorithms? By changing the system, we could free up a lot of time for more interesting activities.

Mobilizon wants to help making this change happen.

To move forward, we need regular donations.
