TIL about steganographic fingerprinting (inserting same-looking variant characters to identify #whistleblower) and the tool SafeText that can check against that, especially together with Apache Tika. A fascinating mash-up of #opsec and #digipres by @exponentialdecay https://exponentialdecay.co.uk/blog/porting-safetext-and-analyzing-digital-content-with-apache-tika/
Just released the latest version of the Raspberry Pi Video Looper 🎉
I added a note not to expose it to the big bad Internet, as Buster is now not supported with security updates any more.
This happens to me more and more. And colleagues don’t seem to care so much any more if what they generate makes sense or actually helps. As long as they’re seen to put something out there. But then others have to clean it up.
„Workslop uniquely uses machines to offload cognitive work to another human being. When coworkers receive workslop, they are often required to take on the burden of decoding the content, inferring missed or false context.“ #workslop

Generative AI? Nein Danke.
I like this a lot. Sticker by @VillageOneCoop
I know this sounds like conspiracy myth, but between this and Ed Zitron‘s (https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-haters-gui/ ) and @pluralistic s writings, maybe it doesn’t matter if all of Gen AI never makes a profit, as long as it removes the ability for critical thinking. And provides a way for those in power to offload responsibility.

I don’t think I sound like an LLM, because I think language itself is so inadequate and strange and often wrong and beautiful, and I’m not good at it at all compared to the non-verbalised things going on, so hey, I’m probably fine.

"Es ist finster – Morgen für Morgen klatscht uns diese Erkenntnis gegen die Stirn wie eine mit Scheiße gefüllte Socke. Aber wir sind Menschen. Wir sind eine Spezies, die Fremden die Hand reicht, wenn sie straucheln. Noch ehe wir darüber nachdenken können, bringt unser Instinkt uns dazu, zu helfen. Wir sind gut darin, zu helfen. Wir sind gut darin, ein Licht leuchten zu lassen. Also."
NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake is doing a Zoom talk on Nov 13 in my colleague Joana Moll's @jmoll art seminar.
One of those scientific findings that make you see the world with new eyes. Sheldrake‘s book on fungi did that for me, too. Great images. #electrostatic #ecology

Memory is never filed away and reopened, like a file on a hard drive. It has to be re-inscribed through action and practice. The infrastructure of memory supports this: it consists of the stories we share, but also feelings, scents, and tastes, or returning to the places where things happened.

somebody told me they're called https://www.youtube.com/@DieVerdammteSpielerei
They also mentioned Belgian surrealism. <3
Kudos and thanks to the organisers of #ipres2024
Great deadpan performance by Ghent brass band at #ipres2024. Does anyone know their name? Is this a tradition? Beautiful and mystifying.
@hvdsomp also in passing mentioned the problem that AI companies bots effectively perform DDOS attacks on sites, which impacts legit memory institutions bots‘ ability to scrape stuff #ipres2024
First time I’ve heard enshittification mentioned in a #digipres context. Great @hvdsomp keynote at #ipres2024
As an artist and teacher working on a digital preservation project, this report by @LM_HATII rings terribly true: https://ipres2024.pubpub.org/pub/yrvrepm9/release/1
"Low overall levels of knowledge of digital object care"
"Lack of formal training in digital preservation and related skills"
"Relevant information science concepts that are potentially helpful are not currently visible or meaningful to artists."
Asking my fellow art school educators: Do you teach digital preservation? Should we? #digipres #ipres2024
I love this book. If you too are interested in scientific explanations of visual phenomena in nature, this is for you: The Nature of Light And Color In The Open Air, by M. Minnaert, 1954. Via Kim Stanley Robinson. https://archive.org/details/minnaert-light-and-color-in-nature
HandBrake now supports encoding to FFV1, the professional digital preservation video codec! All it took was a suggestion in a Github issue, and the maintainers were happy to include it. Now if some of you #digipres colleagues would test that it works as intended, that would be even better. https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/releases/tag/1.8.0 #handbrake #ffv1
This paper about reduced shipping emissions being the cause for the enormous heating up of the oceans might become the first step towards seriously considering geoengineering. https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-024-01442-3
