We are delighted to announce the devroom 'Archives, Libraries and Digital Memory' (Sat, 2027-01-30, afternoon) at #FOSDEM27 🎉
Spearheaded by @swheritage and together with @ecosystems, we're going to focus on the radical notion of preserving information and digital resources for the public good into the future.
FOSS is both content and means, so #FOSDEM is a very fitting place for such a discussion.
We're looking for your contribution as well, see our CfP: https://aldm-devroom.github.io/cfp/
(until Nov 24)
We're looking for folks working at UNT, especially their library

1. Webarchivierung von Regierungs- und Behördenseiten
2. generelle Unterstützung bedrohter Einrichtungen, Initiativen und Projekte

Announcing:
SRC in Saxony-Anhalt - Rescuing public data before the change in government
We look worriedly at the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. There are two ways on how we support all democrats and anti-fascists there:
1. Webarchiving of websites by the local government and agencies.
2. General support for threatened institutions, projects, initiatives, etc.
For more info, see our statement & call-to-action: https://safeguar.de/src_sachsen-anhalt/
In a similar vain as our last post:
Our friends at #SaveOurSigns also published an article in Library Trends
Blake, Molly, Lena Bohman, Jenny McBurney, and Amelia Palacios. "Save Our Signs: National Park Signs and the Power of Crowdsourcing to Combat Censorship." Library Trends 75, no. 1 (2026): 91-117. https://dx.doi.org/10.1353/lib.2026.a999942.
Not breaking news, but important nonetheless:
Our partners at @datarescueproject.org published an article about their work
Bohman, Lena, Lynda Kellam, and Mikala Narlock. "The Data Rescue Project: A Crowdsourced Effort to Preserve At-Risk US Federal Data." Library Trends 75, no. 1 (2026): 72-90. https://dx.doi.org/10.1353/lib.2026.a999941.
We encourage everyone to read it; it's open access :)
Why Germany Is Building an Ark for U.S. Climate Data
"[... T]he German Research Foundation in late 2025 set up a program, with a budget of $35 million, to provide a safe haven for permanently storing copies of U.S. data from public and open sources."

thanks @christianschwaegerl for reporting!

To be very clear about one thing:
If we're not able to match the rate, then there are two options, either a) no stickers, or b) stickers that scream "graphic design is my passion" with subtly wrong colors and additional errors caused by inexperience
But there won't be any genAI involved - this is simply not an option, for many reasons.
Calling the artists in our audience / on the fediverse:
We are interested in formatting our logo + the one for SciOp into (hexagon and/or free-form)
How much would you charge for a commission?
(Trying to ascertain if it even is feasible at all on our shoestring budget, we would love to offer 500$+, but that's simply not feasible. Worst case, no designs)
#fediArtists #Artist #Commission
[Edit: removed an option]
[Edit2: changed the amounts]
[Edit3: clarified the actual task]

We're working behind the scenes on metadata curation and better findability, in conjunction/cooperation with the other data rescue groups/initiatives.
And together with the SHIELD project at @tibosl, ofc
Good things are coming!
In light of recent news, let us repeat:
SRC is very much not only focused on USA and English language resources.
If access to publicly accessible data is threatened, feel free to ping us. We might be able to help.

We (and others) are looking into which of the datasets we collectively have archived - stay tuned
Has anyone contacts with either the NDSU Department of Mathematics or the American Mathematical Society?
We're asking re https://mathgenealogy.org, which has been offline and just came back online today.
