For #ProjectHailMary fans: Scientists have found an amoeba that survives and reproduces at RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES up to 63 C or 145 F. Not Astrophage but might feel kind of at home on Eridani.

Found in thermal hot springs creek in California. Link to paper in comments.

What a fool and what a waste: #TexasFlood has caused #GregAbbott 's "Flood-proof" $96 million "floating border wall" boondoggle to break up & HUNDREDS of ONE-TON buoys are barreling toward bridges near Laredo.

The SHEER SCALE of the f***-up couldn't be more foreseeable.

First time seeing the first postage stamp, called the "Penny Black"

I couldn't help seeing
"MonepennyH"

Does anybody else see that and think of the character "Miss Moneypenny" in James Bond?

Nothing on the Internet backs this up, mind you. Wikipedia says "Her name originated from an unfinished novel by Fleming's older brother, Peter Fleming, who abandoned the project after writing 30,000 words."

Still, who's to say that Fleming's brother didn't draw inspiration from the first stamp?

(The M and H designate the row and column on the printed sheet of stamps.)

Found this 1833 map of "Chicago Town - Population 350" and realized that where I work (the Federal Reserve building) would have been just three blocks South of the original street grid (which ended at Madison) and a short walk South of William Jones farm.
If the Willis/Sears tower was teleported back in time it would have loomed over the river just West, women would've swooned, horses startled. It would've been a whole thing...

FAFO: Vote for the "Leopard that promises to eat your face" party and don't be surprised when it EATS YOUR FACE. Honestly, I FEEL BAD for this guy. #GOP-faithful or not, NO ONE should be deported for what their PARENTS decided when they were FOUR YEARS OLD.

The news said an aurora was visible tonight even in Chicago. So, I went chasing it here in the NW 'burbs. Here's my shot away from house lights as best as I could get.

Ever wonder why #Russians haven't revolted against #Putin 's deadly land grab war in #Ukraine?

The war machine is pumping money into sagging towns & the middle-class even while it creates thousands of Russian war widows & civilian casualties in Ukraine.

SCATHING ruling against Trump's National Guard crackdown in LA.

In his ruling (excerpted below), you can hear Judge Breyer scoffing at Homeland Security's misguided and empty justification for inciting violence against the people. This should hold implications for actions in other states.

Here's Peter Thiel's Project2025-aligned masterplan for a Puppet President carrying out the will of a CEO dictator to gut the US government and replace it with a massive zombie army of unchecked right-wing, White Nationalist ideologues. It's unfolding exactly as planned (so far).
