Good evening Squirrel Fans.

As we watch the end of Western Civilisation slowly unwind before us like a bad BBC producition of ‘Play for Today’ it’s good to know that the Hitchhikers Guide has this to say about such events :-

“Important facts from Galactic history, number two:

(Reproduced from the Siderial Daily Mentioner's Book of popular Galactic History.)

Since this Galaxy began, vast civilizations have risen and fallen, risen and fallen, risen and fallen so often that it's quite tempting to think that life in the Galaxy must be

(a) something akin to seasick — space-sick, time sick, history sick or some such thing, and

(b) stupid.

Douglas Adams — Life, the Universe & Everything.

Right off to continue my explorations of the galaxy as portrayed by Starfield!

Tonights’ quote reminded me of my childhood bedroom which had a carpet that stopped just short of the wall & allowed a much younger & more inquisitve version of me to listen thru the cracks in the floorboards to my parents chatting the kitchen below! :-

“It’s quite easy to accidentally overhear people talking downstairs if you hold an upturned glass to the floorboards and accidentally put your ear to it.”
― Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

@NormanDunbar this must have been where that AI found that reference to your, as yet unpenned, Pico book! Hopefully you will not be eaten by an aligator before you have chance to write it! 😁
:-

“No other library anywhere, for example, has a whole gallery of unwritten books - books that would have been written if the author hadn't been eaten by an alligator around chapter 1, and so on. Atlases of imaginary places. Dictionaries of illusory words. Spotter's guides to invisible things. Wild thesauri in the Lost Reading Room. A library so big that it distorts reality and has opened gateways to all other libraries, everywhere and everywhen...”

Having braved the aisles of Costco™ this afternoon this quote seemed somehow appropriate! :-

“It is generally thought, on those worlds where the mall lifeform has seeded, that people take the wire baskets away and leave them in strange and isolated places, so that squads of young men have to be employed to gather them together and wheel them back. This is exactly the opposite of the truth. In reality the men are hunters, stalking their rattling prey across the landscape, trapping them, breaking their spirit, taming them and herding them to a life of slavery.”

It has to be said that this is up there with how the driver of the snowplough gets to work in a blizzard & how Fabergé got the chickens to lay those fancy eggs!

“I’ve always been a bit puzzled about that story. What’s so hard about pulling a sword out of a stone? The real work’s already been done. You ought to make yourself useful and find the man who put the sword in the stone in the first place, eh?”

Reading about the fears around AI outpacing it’s developers tonight’s quote seemed strangely appropriate! :-

It is said that the Discworld once perched on the back of 5 elephants but that one, after a drunken night out with the gods, slipped & fell :-

“No one actually saw it land, which raised the interesting philosophical point: When millions of tons of angry elephant come spinning through the sky, but there is no one to hear it, does it - philosophically speaking - make a noise?”

When thinking about tonight’s quote it struck me that books about the world are increasingly being written by AI! :-

be written by people who knew all about books
rather than all about the world.”

Tonight’s quote reminded me of my younger sister who, as a young teenager, proscribed to the theory that makeup should be applied with gusto! That’s not to say she was unattractive, because she really wasn’t, if her string of admirers was anything to go by, but knights dressing for battle had less face protection! :-

“She wore so much thick white makeup in order to conceal her naturally rosy complexion that if she turned around suddenly her face would probably end up on the back of her head.”
― Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies

C.M.O.T. Dibbler (in his Director’s phase) would have a field day here in Round World these days! :-

“Why is it all Mr. Dibbler’s films are set against the background of a world gone mad?” said the dwarf. Soll’s eyes narrowed. “Because Mr. Dibbler,” he growled, “is a very observant man.”

Been chatting with my Fedi Fren @Soldusty about how short the days seem to be nowadays - perhaps the multiverse is trying to fit more in …

“A year went past. The days followed one another patiently. Right back at the beginning of the multiverse they had all tried passing at the same time, and it hadn't worked.”

I generally get at least to plan ‘D’ all the preceding iterations having failed spectacularly! :-

“Plan A had worked. Plan B had failed. Everything depended on Plan C, and there was one drawback to this: he had only ever planned as far as B.”
― Terry Pratchett, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

I have felt like this for the last 12 months at least! :-

While roaming the warren that is L-Space I came across this & felt it was well worth an airing :-

“Basically, it was p’ch’zarni’chiwkov. This epiglottis-throttling word is seldom used on the Disc except by highly paid stunt linguists and, of course, the tiny tribe of the K’turni, who invented it. It has no direct synonym, although the Cumhoolie word “squernt” (“the feeling upon finding that the previous occupant of the privy has used all the paper”) begins to approach it in general depth of feeling. The closest translation is as follows:

The nasty little sound of a sword being unsheathed right behind one at just the point when one thought one had disposed of one’s enemies”

I feel that yesterday had a very pineappley texture … I’m still waiting for the peaches! :-
