"We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding."

Even high-powered replications won't help assessing the robustness of the psychological literature, because the original studies are so imprecise and low-powered that one cannot call them into question with a new set of results.

Hello Mastodon! Does anyone know of replication studies or meta-analyses in psychophysics or psychoacoustics? I'm compiling resources for a project on reproducibility in the field, any references of papers or preprints would be greatly appreciated! #psychophysics #psychoacoustics #audition #Replication #MetaAnalysis #Reproducibility

Congratulations to my students Azal Le Bagousse and Mauro Manucci for their outstanding presentations at Forum Acusticum #FA2026 this morning, despite the very early schedule.

The ARCHER2 supercomputer consumes 3MW. That is as much as 30,000 people. It would be quite disappointing if it could not do "superhuman" compute tasks.

The planned hyperscaler in Motherwell will be 500 MW, so 5 million people-equivalent purely in energy terms, ignoring the resources and energy needed for manufacturing and building the infrastructure and servers.
That's the entire population of Scotland.

@timnitGebru and @emilymbender puncture the latest AI hype, addressing everything from "hacking" to "math breakthroughs" to "superhuman" machines (and possibly break a record for scare quote usage along the way).

"Granny does rather wish that biologists would stop trying to teach the philosophy of science to philosophers of science [...] One does get a little tired of being told by psychological Darwinists that “the biological approach to the mind” or, more irritating still, “the scientific worldview,” somehow mandates that their (in fact, quite speculative) phylogenetictheories are true."

"I was, and remain, perplexed by an attitude of ebullient optimism that's particularly characteristics of Pinker's book ["How the mind works"]. [...] The last forty or fifty years have demonstrated pretty clearly that there are aspects of higher mental processes into which the current armamentarium of computational models, theories, and experimental techniques offer vanishingly little insights. [...] How, in light of this, could anybody manage to be so relentlessly cheerful?"
