“I am conscious I have deserv’d all I suffer.” What did remorse, hope and survival mean aboard HMS Calcutta in 1803? Join me at the Migration & Mobility Seminar & @ihrhistorylab, Senate House London/online, 6 Oct, on convict letters & Britain’s transportation system.

The paper is part of seminar with a fantastic program on migration, mobility, lived experience, and the ways in which individuals made sense of movement, displacement, and belonging across different historical contexts and periods.

What can we learn from historical logbooks? Far more than routes and wind directions. Looking forward to our roundtable at the conference “Navigating Histories” at the German Maritime Museum to explore logbooks as sources for climate, mobility & global history #earlymodern #history #maritimehistory #histodons

I mean, look ⬇️

The Predatory Sea: Human Trafficking and Captivity in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean – Book Presentation on Monday, 9 March, 1pm.

As part of our online lecture series “Ships & Seafaring 1500–1800“, we are delighted to welcome Prof Dr Casey Schmitt (Cornell University) for a book presentation that promises to reshape how we think about maritime violence, captivity, and colonialism.

A century before the height of the Atlantic slave trade, early modern racialized slavery emerged through practices of captive-taking and human trafficking in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Caribbean. Schmitt’s book – the first full-length study of this deeply entangled history of captivity and colonialism – reframes our understanding of early modern racialized slavery and colonialism.

Join us for free on Monday, 9 March 2026 on ZOOM.
1–2 pm CET | 12 noon (UK) | 8 am EDT
