Before Google’s arrival a few months ago, an estimated quarter of a million trees occupied the 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest near the town of Muhos in rural northern Finland. Now they are all gone. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2026/oct/22/finland-google-felling-trees-datacentre
Canada’s dangerous C-22 surveillance bill is now before the Senate. It will force tech companies to build surveillance into their products, threatening everyone’s security and privacy. There’s still time to speak out. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2026/10/canadians-are-running-out-time-oppose-dangerous-c-22-surveillance-bill
One dependency on one company can switch off half of a modern army. Every military should be thinking about that.

Do not believe the occupation’s claims of a ceasefire while the bombardment continues, the famine in Gaza persists, and the war has yet to end.
People are still struggling just to secure a single loaf of bread.
Aid has been blocked and severely restricted; hunger is destroying us.
We are utterly exhausted... we only wish to be able to live our lives.
Please, do not forget us—keep us in your prayers. 💔

Removing the topsoil too, salting the earth so the rest of us don't 'win'...because it's all just an insane game to these people. They'll destroy the Earth to win an imaginary prize in their tiny little heads.
I love to see the smaller parties come together along with other interest groups. I do hope more join in and fight. We need to protect our country and Carney’s plans are nothing but greedy power and resource grabs for capitalists.

Everybody in the pro-democracy movement should have Ilhan Omar’s back.
"Meta’s conduct during Brazil’s election has become a global warning sign. On Wednesday, U.N. special rapporteurs criticized the American company and called on the platform not to interfere in Brazil’s democratic process.
In their statement, the U.N. rapporteurs asked Meta to assess whether its moderation, recommendation and artificial intelligence systems had disproportionately restricted one side of Brazil’s election debate.
They also asked the company to provide adequate explanations and remedies, apply its rules consistently and without discrimination, maintain transparent dialogue with civil society, and ensure complaints can be addressed throughout the election period."

I hate to break it to the average person in Toronto but there is no solution to traffic congestion other than better cycling/pedestrian/transit infrastructure.
If you are against those things, I need you to show me which homes and businesses we are bulldozing for another lane.
The economist lady on #BBcquestiontime reminds the audience that Benn had the idea of the Soveirgn Wealth Fund back in the 70s when we discovered North Sea Oil
As Energy Secretary in the mid-1970s, Tony Benn proposed using revenues from North Sea oil to create a state-managed fund through the British National Oil Corporation.
His idea was to establish public ownership over the oil wealth and reinvest the proceeds into British industry, energy infrastructure, and long-term economic development, rather than allowing the profits to be absorbed into general government spending.
He was ignored.
#Thatcher's government used North Sea oil revenues to help fund sweeping tax cuts, pay off national debt, and cover the rising costs of unemployment benefits during restructuring in the 1980s.
Unlike countries like Norway, the UK did not create a sovereign wealth fund to save the oil money for future generations, choosing instead to integrate the tax windfall directly into the general government budget.
Todayt, we are in horrendous debt meanwhile Norway which has a government debt of around 54% of its gross domestic product, is not in financial trouble because of that massive sovereign wealth fund, built from those oil revenues.

Aaaaand more or less complete. Though the kind of thing it’s fun to add to when you have the right piece. Added my grandmother’s very fine Edwardian era beaded bags and a gold mannequin hand and moved a couple of things around a bit. It’s making me happy.
TIL about the Western Goals Foundation - a private spy agency created by folks mad that McCarthyism and FBI assassinations were getting a little pushback. They ended up getting dismantled after their role in the Iran-Contra affair came to light.
@blogdiva This is also why experts recommend away from any kind of touchscreen voting device in favor of optical scan hand marked paper ballots (except for voters who require assistive tech).
But that's a battle for another day; no county can change its voting equipment at this point in the election.
@blogdiva One of the problems with touchscreens and ballot marking devices (the kind evidently used in this Tennessee county) is that there is no way to distinguish a machine error (or malicious machine behavior) from an innocent mistake (voter touched the wrong place on the screen, etc). And in practice, it's almost always the latter. So no individual case is a "smoking gun".
But it underscores how critical it is for voters to check the paper carefully!

the moral of this story is that Stella Parton had a PAPER BALLOT that corroborated the computer glitch.
READ UP ON YOUR STATE’S VOTING PROCESS
each state & territory has their own elections boards. voting and vote counting machines vary from state to state.
that’s why many folks in states with all electronic voting in-person are choosing mail-in ballots; but you may have the option to get a paper ballot if you ask for one. check your state’s rules…🧵
