There are only 2 types of atom in the universe, hydrogen and helium. The other 1% of variant atoms are statistically irrelevant and therefore can be ignored.

The Highland Council constituency of Wick & East Caithness is having a by-election because the councillor William Mackay resigned after being one of the number of men on the Council licensing committee who voted to let a convicted rapist keep his taxi licence.
Mr Mackay has a well known nickname from before being a councillor, when he operated a cattle insemination service. However, the local press lacked the guts to run a headline "A.I. Willie resigns for being a dick"
I've been asked to set up a clubs website but the last decade or so I've only been doing handcrafted sites & am out of touch with all the sitebuilder/CMS tools these days.
What's the opinion on the preferred tool, not made by nazis, for making a site:
- with a few public pages, the bulk a members only area;
- includes a forum in that private area (phpbb, or another suggestion);
- allows specified members to upload content to public or private areas, preferrably via the site itself?
Yet again another example of what can only be described as deliberate anti-Scottish discrimination by UK companies.
"Free UK mainland delivery"- except "the Highlands" (every postcode north of Perth) gets charged- it was £12 last year, £25 last month, now increased to £50, for goods up to £100 price. Yet strangely the cost at the Post Office hasn't increased at those rates.
OK, let's get them sent to a friend in Edinburgh & collect next time we're passing- oops that "free delivery" is £7 🤬
Not my usual type of post, but 2 young ladies I know, both 3rd yr students at Edinburgh, have had 2 flatmates suddenly pull out of their lease of a 4 bedroom HMO in EH11, so are looking for replacements. Needs to be students; share of rent would be £550-600 (room sizes vary), & equal split on utilities. Location suits both Edinburgh & Napier.
If anyone is, or knows, a student who'd be interested, DM me and I can pass on an email address for direct discussion

On 4th July perhaps those of the USA might reflect on the words of one of their great orators-

I see there is a good old fashioned tankie standing for the Highlands & Islands: standing on a policy that: Ukraine will lose the war; we should enter a non-agression pact with Russia & buy their cheap oil; spend nothing on defence & use that money for public services.
How any of these fall within devolved competency of the Scottish Parliament is a whole different question he doesn't answer- it's not even as if he calls for this to be the policies of an independent Scotland.
It's not #Caturday today, but we have a new member of the household...
A reminder for those in Scotland, all those 16 or over legally resident regardless of citizenship are entitled to register to vote. Deadline for registering in time for the Scottish Parliament elections is 20th April. So maybe remind any of your neighbours, students, etc who might not know they are eligible.
"Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?"
While it may be nice for your ego when your child considers you the font of all knowledge when working on something, it is so much more satisfying when they realise that they know as much or more on a subject than you, and will work on it treating you as a peer or even as their rubber duck.

Cool Youtube video from last year "There is no Antimemetics Division". Someone should publish this as a book...
Good book, someone ought to make a movie or video version of it

"There is No Antimemetics Division", new video on Youtube

Which story definitely isn't in a book, or a previous series of Youtube videos, or SCP site posts...

I notice a number of comparisons being made between the Palestine Action hunger strikers & Bobby Sands. What is overlooked in these, is that Bobby Sands was a convicted prisoner whereas the current hunger strikers have not been convicted of any crime but have been imprisoned since November 2024 for an *allegation* of criminal damage.
Why have they not been released on bail, and if there is some need to detain them why have they not had early trial dates set?
On this solstice day, let us pause a moment to think of the true meaning of Hogswatch.
It's time of year to re-read "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper; "Hogfather" by Terry Pratchett; and the short story "Overtime" by @cstross which is finally out on dead tree, but for years has been available for free at https://reactormag.com/overtime//
