Inflicting sleep deprived unplanned piano antics on a poor Hong Kong mall

My track ‘Spirit Wars’ was originally somewhat inspired by the history of and called ‘Walled City’ (and I’m writing this from where that was in Kowloon) - but in the end the desire to reference the four musical themes / ‘winds’ that war it out and jostle for position won out.

I’d like for people to hear this track; it’s maybe one of the more interesting and fierce ones I’ve made. It has Andy Knight on pocket trumpet, Frank Byng on drums, Andrea Black on vocals, and Sarah Sarhandi on the viola.

(Picture is the remnants of the South Gate.)

It is good thumbs down / negs got taken away, but perhaps we should replace all of them - even likes - with an even more exciting, singular 'Generic Emotional Reaction Unit'?

With this wonderful change, it can be entirely left up to the poster's hubris/debilitating fear as to what has been provoked in the reader!

If listeners get that far in, there’s a few pieces in my 11 hour ‘Otherscapes’ release that relate to experiences in Hong Kong. :) Inspired by a few friends here, I’ll indulge in a tiny bit of background:

56.
Kowloon Flyby
https://robertloganmusic.bandcamp.com/track/kowloon-flyby
[It’s in 9/8, which has always seemed a very danceable division! Apart from environmental voices/metal sounds, all Korg MS 20 and a Moog, iirc. I’d get strong feelings from lights and memories of cyberpunk fiction I’d be reading under city lights by the water.]

85.
Tai O
https://robertloganmusic.bandcamp.com/track/tai-o
[Tai O’ was my favourite fishing village back then - but any such place is against a background of denser sky-risers looming. All FM and recordings of oil canisters. One of the oldest tracks on the release.]

97.
Little Hong Kong
https://robertloganmusic.bandcamp.com/track/little-hong-kong
[Though it’s largely in equal temperament and a light one, the lead lines are written in quarter tones - reflections of the intonations of the market voices that come in the second half. Had an experience of Mong Kok markets through the eyes of a child.]

I like Gerald Manley Hopkins’s word, ‘Inscape’ - the inner character, or distinct identity of an object, place, person, event. The fictional interior experience of a place like this seems always in a state of becoming, and in a feedback loop with making music.

More from that hike. :)

This butterfly landed on my partner’s hand during a hike in Hong Kong. We wondered about its damaged wings, and their cause soon revealed itself - moments later, after flying off, the butterfly was pursued by a hornet.🐝 [had packed phone away and just missed capturing it.] I knew they could be predatory, but for some reason never assumed hornets were given to chasing butterflies.

I hope it’s ok if I inundate my fellow Mastodon companions with [possibly an excess of] Hong Kong pictures / music related thoughts deriving from the atmospheres here…? This place has always proved unusually fertile for triggering my imagination in its visual / sound scapes. (For full disclosure, and distancing this from mainframe social media, I am deeply unskilled in photography and also being pelted by inflamed tinnitus and sleeplessness. 🥴)

About to fly to Hong Kong🇭🇰 , and Heathrow’s notice screen is glitching beautifully.

For my birthday, my wife got me the best chocolate croissant (?) I have ever encountered. It goes well with the book.

idk, Masodon tradition I guess? :D 🇭🇺✈️

I see this gets a second reappraisal, like the Star Wars prequels...or something.

Yet to be convinced myself. 😅

I can't remember if I shared this already (like with everything), but I made a video for 'Selfless Mind' - off my last album, 'Habitations'.

It ends up that I've gone from thinking I'd lost the musical plot to finding 'Habitations' a release I'm maybe happiest with of all albums - so yeah, that's a relief. :) At the same time, I don't really know how to make videos. Bees are wonderful to watch either way; that can't be defeated by a video maker who doesn't know how to make videos. ;)
