… on Linux it doesn’t have the right fonts to render them all nice & prettily. So rather than reinvent the wheel, I want to make sure I have the tools at my disposal when I eventually escape from the Evil Empire.

And sooo many of the standard fonts I’ve used over the years in all my docs (Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, etc.) are Microsquish creatures and therefore slippery as eels to get a hold of… I may just try grabbing the whole Windows\Fonts directory and see if they’re installable. Can’t see why not.
Why do I care? Many of my docs are ongoing/updated/still in use, with considerable formatting. LibreOffice is perfectly happy with them, but…

Well, I got sweet nothing done that I actually planned on doing this evening, but I had an interesting evening (re)discovering how to a) install additional fonts system-wide on Ubuntu, and b) necessarily figuring out how to access a mounted USB thumb drive from the cli. (All the documentation talks about is how to un/mount the damn thing, but that’s uselessly redundant since Linux does that for you automatically. Bah!)
I got there in the end.
NB: font families are much harder to come by…

Brand new laptop, not happy w/screen. Never had this before.
It looks like the display is not completely even. On a dark screen especially, you can see light bleeding through at all four corners and at various points along the bottom. It looks like the screen was forced into the chassis lid and someone ? pressed down too hard at those points.
Also at least 1 dead pixel.
Am I being too fussy?
Send it back for replacement? 🤷♀️

I was today years old when I learned that apparently you’re supposed to reapply thermal paste to a laptop roughly once a year, to keep it in tip-top shape.

Is this just gamers-gone-mad nonsense, or have I been computing all wrong for the past 30yrs? Cos I’ve had plenty of laptops, they’ve all lasted 5-6yrs and still been working when I bought the next one, and I’ve never applied thermal paste in my life…

Can anyone recommend a good cross-platform ereader device? I like my Kindle, but I want to break free of Amz. Similarly no Nook, and unless someone can convince me otherwise, no Kobo.
I don’t want to be tied to any DRM platform; if I’m going to convert 1k+ books to a non-DRM ePub format, I want something I can store/read them on without 👀 being monitored by AI/algorithms.
