Academy Award nominated ***Raise the Red Lantern*** will be released to theatres in a 35th anniversary 4K remastered version this November!

Gong Li’s performance and the entire film warrants this. It’s been my personal benchmark for period films since I first saw it in the 1990s.

I have no idea whether it will run near me, but it will surely be available on one of the major streamers, and hopefully a remastered disc release to replace the old DVDs.

Here’s the rerelease trailer:

This is a provincial supreme court ruling from BC that deserves amplification.

*A B.C. Supreme Court judge has ended an extradition proceeding for an unnamed Canadian because agents for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration “operated unlawfully and illegally in Canada.”*

*Justice Catherine Murray said DEA agents approached the Canadian, an alleged drug smuggler, on this side of the border without first contacting the RCMP as required.*

CBC and APTN have just dropped the trailer and Canadian premiere dates for season two of the global hit show ***North of North*** about a young Inuk woman ditching her narcissistic husband and seeking her own path (with their daughter in tow).

If you haven’t seen season one and you’re outside Canada, it’s available on Netflix. I’m tagging kDrama and cDrama because I believe that this one with resonate in terms of Siaja’s story of reconciling family, expectations, spirituality and her own goals. The costumes and styling are gorgeous too.

From posts by the official *North of North* production team on other social media.

“*The show was proudly filmed on location in Nunavut (with some scenes also shot in Toronto) with an amazing team of Northern Canadian talent both in front of and behind the camera. Beyond local storytelling, we prioritized featuring authentic clothing and accessories from Inuit, Indigenous and Northern Canadian artisans throughout the series.*

*Where to watch in Canada:*
*• Sept 1: APTN+*
*• Sept 8: CBC Gem, CBC TV and APTN TV*
*• International release on Netflix later this year*

*Working with and highlighting Inuit, Indigenous and Northern Canadian brands has been a priority for us since our pilot episode. What are some of your favourite Arctic/Inuit brands?”*

CN trains surrounded by wildfire in (north) west Ontario.

The rail and road corridors from southern Ontario to prairies are few and remain a vital and critical domestic transportation backbone.

A video from a crew has gone viral. CN has suspended operations in the affected area.

This poll has closed. It didn’t get a lot of traction but as there is some interest in having a groupbot for cdramas to increase federation and visibility of cdrama posts replies, I will ask the fedigroups team to set one up.

I’ll make an announcement when it’s available. It could be a while as the initial set up done manually by volunteers.

Comet water has contaminants?

Who would have thought…

Smaller molecule but similar to LSD.

Chemical engineering deficiencies again.

Mastodon cdrama fans — I know from previous posts that there’s a small community here that would like to find one another and increase our interaction.

While hashtags, boosts and following one another are helpful, posts from those of us (like me) who aren’t on the really big instances don’t necessarily get federated widely. This is makes it especially difficult to reach one another for a global discussion that includes non-English posts.

Another helpful mechanism is to set up a groupbot that will propagate posts immediately to all followers of the group bot account. This not only helps regular followers but also gets the posts and replies distributed more widely.

I am already responsible for another genre show fedigroups bot, and would be willing to take this on if there’s interest. Once the bot is set up, those interested would need request to follow the bot and then I would approve for each follower to be added.

Would you be interested? Please boost to increase reach.

WATCH PARTY ANNOUNCEMENT

A call out to any and all who are interested in joining watch parties for ***The Ark***.

I intend to start hosting with 2 episodes — season 1, episodes 1 & 2 — ***tomorrow, Saturday, June 13th at 3:00 pm EDT (UTC -4)***.

*SYNOPSIS*
*100 years in the future, planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race. The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life. With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.*

Availability has been a challenge. It would be great if those participating from outside Canada could share where you’ve found the show available. (It’s available here on Crave and CTV Sci-fi channel.)

For the US, it is available on Fandango and Philo (but leaving in 5 days). Digital purchase on Prime and Apple is available.

It’s available on Binge in Australia; on Universal and SFR Play in France; on NOW and Sky in the UK and Ireland; on WOW and Prime in Germany.

Apologies for the short notice. My own set of BlueRay discs for seasons 1 & 2 have just arrived, so I feel confident to host. (We recently had availability issues with some of the episodes on Crave on our television, and ended up viewing them on a tablet. 🤦🏼‍♀️)

Started the new Chen Duling anchored cdrama *Ashes to Crown* on Netflix.

It’s based on the novel *Queen Chu* in which a betrayed Empress gets to return to a younger age and attempt to change her own fate and that of the state.

The opening title credits song is up there among great women’s power ballads. It’s worth a listen even if idol dramas aren’t your thing.

Here’s a lyrics video with Pinyin and English subtitles.

This new framing of human communication around power (weak vs powerful) danger (safe vs dangerous), and order (ordered vs chaotic). Super interesting with profound implications.

This would overturn an emotion-based framing of valence, arousal and dominance (VAD) that has been the consensus for more than 70 years — a consensus that has has far reaching implications in fields from psychology and linguistics to LLMs/AI and neurobiology.

From the Phys.org article:

“In artificial intelligence, the implications are immediate. Many natural language processing systems rely on sentiment analysis grounded in VAD-like frameworks. If those frameworks misrepresent the essential nature of meaning, then AI systems may be systematically misinterpreting human language.”

My own thought, based on the article, is that the researchers study seems based on relatively small of sample of texts, limited to English and formal translations of other language literature into English. Significant work would need to be done to validate more comprehensively.

That said, it underscores how profoundly AI’s underlying assumptions, based on inaccurate models of human language and behaviour, may be misreading the texts they are analyzing.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) has uncovered, digitized and is making available a significant collection of original and innovative Inuit animation from Cape Dorset, Nunavut.

‘These newly uncovered reels run for more than 50 minutes and are made by 12 different filmmakers — nearly triple the number of reels first screened to the public in “Animation from Cape Dorset.”

“Think of it as a director's cut,” Fournier said. “All of [the reels] had never seen the light of day or had never gotten into any sort of acclaim or accreditation for the artists. So, being able to have this body of work, and being able to make it widely available to folks is really an exciting, exciting time.”’

Reel #1 is embedded in the report at the link.

Hi @thegiddystitcher.

I follow you here on Mastodon and appreciate your wealth of knowledge but, I am also on Lemmy.

I have noticed that you have left some very old posts stickied on knitting@lemmy.world, and are still listed as a mod there.

I’d like to respectfully suggest that you unstick those posts. The community seems to be picking up in activity, but having 2 year old theme posts stuck at the top makes it seem like a dead community at first glance. (I mistook it for that recently.)
