Through my writing life, nothing improved my writing more than participation in peer-based workshops: where a group of writers at about the same stage in their artistic development gather to read one another's work and offer feedback specifically aimed at improving each other's stories.

Jenkins understands it, though. I've been reading, writing, and debating about this stuff since the late 1990s, and I learned something new on every page of this delightful book. This should be required reading for anyone who makes music, loves music, or cares about musicians and the arts more generally. It's a towering accomplishment and a brilliant read.

For years I assumed that many of the things I was good at were nothing special. When I was complimented on what I was doing, I assumed that anyone could have done it and that eventually people would discover that fact. This is the essence of impostor syndrome, a problem that is rampant in our field and probably in others.
