Biologist Pierre Joliot, photosynthesis pioneer and grandson of Pierre and Marie Curie, dies at 94
"Inspired by the work of American scientist Robert Emerson, Joliot used light flashes to study the oxygen production of algae and observed that it took 4 pulses to release the gas, leading him to decipher one of the fundamental mechanisms of photosynthesis: 4 electrons must be stripped from a water molecule for 1 molecule of oxygen to be produced."
