Wayback link because the original is returning 403 now.

Seems to be a sitewide thing rather than withdrawal of that specific transcript.

Everybody's talking about Margaret Hamilton and the Apollo Project because Yay! Space!

I don't see anyone else, yet, talking about this:

I am finally worn down enough to have blocked the LLM user who posted a "just fork it" kind of thing at me here.

Please don't do that.

Those "upgrade to stay safe" approaches were always lies, because they never stopped.

If they ever made things better in any real way, they would have tapered off.

Those updates are the Collateralized Debt Obligations of the tech world.

A mix of honest bugfixes along with new features and redesigns and re-architecturing that dragged in new bugs and new cognitive burdens and captured more of our lives.

Crypto, NFTs, and AI have been successive waves of trying to foist these accumulated technical debt derivatives onto the next greater fool.

and we all just keep patching and patching and "upgrading" and patching

This one's been percolating for a little while:

Even before the advent of slop, the move fast and break things culture was pervasive, soaked into most software projects, FOSS or otherwise.

Exhortations to update to the latest patches was widespread. Stability meant, at best, long term support versions with half-lives of at best a couple of years.

I don't know who needs to hear this again, but:

"A computer operating system that respects the user’s freedom is one essential ingredient for building a reliable, trustable computing system."

How could I have learned history when young, not yet having a sense of the weight of years?

This has been ongoing since Tuesday with no word as to when (or even if) it might be restored.

(the linked article mentions service restorations & gives some timelimes but none of those have come through to my local one)

https://www.cutoday.info/Fresh-Today/Sharetec-Outage-Knocks-Credit-Unions-Offline-Across-Multiple-States

Haven't seen mention of anyone else getting caught out by this, but as best I can tell, quite a few credit unions across the US have been shut down by an outage at their private-equity-owned data processing vendor.

People talk about crypto and especially its most unhinged manifestation and elaboration, NFTs as antecedents to the current grift FOMO.

But they talk less about Uber, but for toothpicks. Uber, but for divorce. Uber, but for cancer.

The appification of every last, blasted thing, the mad rush to digitalize every last shred of human activity, to intermediate, monopolize, and then monetize the monopolized intermediation. I mean, does anyone remember the pizza delivery arbitrage scheme?

When Intel managed to make Moore's "Law" keep coming true, there at least was something behind the future orientation to it all. But not only has that stopped, while we were still coasting forward on the momentum built up from a half-century of its acceleration, the ravenous speculative land grab has thrown the transmission in reverse, throwing shrapnel all over.

When you get hit by any of it, if you have the temerity to say "ow!" suddenly you're an "AI hater".

"our code is filled with so many more bugs than we could see before that we have to burn the biosphere to flush them out" sure is a look.

At this point I'm not even mad at or about AI over it, so much as I am even more mad about the velocity hamster wheel.

The original sin for distros was the adoption of scheduled releases and cadence.

Go back to "we'll release when it's ready."

oh, "yay"

laptop is locked up

It is "on" (solid red LED on the lid, orange key LED indicating "mic-disabled" is lit, can toggle green "Fn lock" LED in upper-left on and off)

Doesn't sleep if wall power is removed (which I've configured it to do).

So far, nothing seems to reach it via wireless network. 😢

Probably left it loaded with some resource hog website but forgot to enable enough swap? and then that wonderful kernel completely fails to protect responsiveness of any kind

😡
