oh hey I'd tried one of these before, and it totally didn't work, but just installed this one and now both macOS and iOS will correctly dodge the AI results even if I open the browser through some other route or accidentally use the built-in search https://apps.apple.com/us/app/udm14-for-safari/id6520379591
udm14 for Safari

like it's literally hundreds of times faster in times of TTFP. why would I want to wait tens of seconds for a wrong answer when I can get a correct answer within milliseconds

finally managing to enable https://udm14.org everywhere (particularly, Alfred) and dang I don't know why I haven't done this yet; it is SO much faster to get to search results on Google without the gigantic LLM waste-product at the top of the page

I suspect I will eventually have to just disable voice commands entirely, which will be surrendering such an enormously valuable set of ADHD affordances (not to mention rendering my watch basically non-functional) that I am extremely reluctant to do it, but at some point the executive function risks from accidental hallucinations next to literally ANY text will outweigh any benefit from being able to set timers / record reminders / take notes hands free

FB25344820 if you are the sort of person for whom that is a useful sequence of letters and numbers, but, my expectations are low that anything will come of this. It is so depressing to have my computing experience be this ever-shrinking safe area between bear traps I have to dodge just to get anything done

okay I toggled the "screen time" setting that allows me to opt out of this crap for the time being, but concerningly before I realized that they'd twiddled that setting on upgrade, there's a new "helpful" thing where if you *select some text*, it puts a little "siri" button next to it, so you can slop up your *reading* even if you have "writing tools" disabled. Switching back to Siri Classic fixes this but I assume _eventually_ that won't be an option, so I've complained.

(this is one of the reasons that I want to be able to maintain some grace for sloperators and not condemn everything with the same level of unlimited vitriol. I know I'll be unable to tell people to stop using the plagiarism robots due to differences of opinion, but I'd _really_ like to maintain enough credibility with my disagreeable interlocutors to at _least_ be able to say "at least don't use the CSAM generator on your codebase, please" and be listened to)

PyPy's slopscore is still pretty good (A+!) but I was definitely not happy to see a few recent commits from Grok, of all things

"glyph why are you always shaving all these yaks"

look buddy I am just trying to live my goddamn life, the yaks are attacking _me_.

I just wanted to UPDATE MY DOCUMENTATION TO SAY THAT I DON'T LIKE AI

I was not trying to DEBUG A JITTED GARBAGE COLLECTION SYSTEM

fine, I did it https://github.com/pypy/pypy/issues/5693

macOS 27.2 makes me embarrassed for the Siri team. "Siri AI" is still "beta", but now you can't enable the production, non-"AI" version of Siri. Part of the OS is just randomly "beta" now

OpenAI and Anthropic successfully built the Library of Babel, and burnt the one in Alexandria to make room for it. Mark Zuckerberg tried and failed to build the Matrix.

okay did anybody report it yet

@glyph Update! News! Scandal! The polishing cloth bundled with any iPad that has the etched glass screen is BIGGER (and rectangular) than the (square) polishing cloth you can buy retail! I now have one of each.

Oh FFS. If you just patched /etc/ssl/cert.pem on all your macOS endpoints, rejoice: the just landed Apple OS update to 26.7.2 / 27.2 will revert that for you and put the emSign and AAA roots back.

 #emudhra

there is a bug in bytearray in pypy3-PyPy8, I need to get in a car in like 3 minutes does anyone else want to report this

Dear software companies:

I do not want an Experience. I want to do the thing I launched your program to do and then move on with my fucking life. I do not want to remember how your software felt to use. I want to remember the Work I did while using your software.

You are not designing an amusement park. You are designing a tool. My screwdriver is not an Experience. Building this furniture is an Experience.

Mozilla: Hmm…what do people want?

Mozilla: Remember those older memes? Don’t they remind you of how things were before the web went to shit?

People: From back when you made a browser?

@glyph threw up a few PRs which were touching CONTRIBUTNG.md /.rst, rather than READMEs. What's your take on where this detail lives? I anticipate you were feeling contextual about this but lemme' know if I'm far from what you were hoping for here
