Anyone running a RaspberryPi with Raspbian, or whatever it's called, and PHP that knows the best way to safely update PHP to a patched version?

"The U.S. and European Union are in formal talks over a biometric data-sharing arrangement that could give the Department of Homeland Security access to fingerprint and other biometric records (including DNA) held by EU member states."

and

"FBI Director Kash Patel says he has forged new law enforcement partnerships with China and Russia, two longtime U.S. rivals, over the past year in hopes of gaining allies in combating transnational crime."

I'm sure it will all be fine...

A warming planet means an end to the forest folk.

We will sacrifice the trees near our homes to break the fires. We will be forced to remove our shade, increase the drying of our land, and make the droughts ever frequent.

Our land will turn to dust.

The great fire will come more often.

We won't forget who caused this.

Once our homes are gone we will have nothing to lose. We will come for them in numbers we can't yet mass. Finally they will share our loss.

They will repent too late.

Give me the dappled shade of a tree and a cooling breeze. We are forest folk not meant for this heat.

In fact, things looking like perfect perspective, showing that every part of a building aligned exactly, used to be a givaway that it was computer graphics.

I tried this on a real photo I just took and the lines don't converge on the same point.

Lens distortion and inaccuracies in buildings mean ideasised perspective lines don't always match what you'll see in photos. Anyone who's ever tiled a room will attest to how crooked walls, floors and ceilings really are.

Also works on Win7 ultimate, as will the other software you're probably trying to install that necessitates Win7 pro and IE9...

Installing IE9 on a fresh Win7 pro VM, for reasons?

Lots of people report having trouble finding a standalone installer for IE9. All the ones they find try to connect to microsoft to download more software, and fail.

It's probably not the wrong installer but your Win7 install is missing one critical update: KB2454826

Is this old enough to be #retrocomputing ?

New, old stock, British Gas 5¼" floppy discs.

#retrocomputing #retrogaming

I was about to shun all technology, turn my back on society and live the life of a cantankerous hermit deep in the woods.

I'd had enough of my struggles with computers, infrastructure, corporations and AI chatbots cosplaying helpdesks.

Then I discovered Mythic Beasts. Things changed. I realised I'd forgotten how good life could be with clear, comprehensive interfaces and knowledgeable, responsive, proactive support.

Thank you @beasts

For a future restoration project I'm going back to 1980.

The rare and elusive Transam Tuscan. An S-100 bus computer that made the commodore PET look dainty.

The entry-level model apparently cost £2,125 without the twin floppy drives.

Today on "What the hell are you playing at now? Why does the house smell weird?", I'm making custom tips for a cheap Lidl soldering iron and using 80% lactic acid as flux for the initial tinning.

Warning: Contains full fat leaded solder. Inhale the goodness*. No point keeping smart now so-called AI has taken over and Trump/Putin (Trutin? Prump?) are going to trigger a biblically accurate Armageddon.

*Don't.

No space left for a hashtag above. So here's one #retrogaming

Acorn Archimedes A3010. Restoration complete.

Battery leak damage took out 10 tracks on the PCB including 5 that go under the floppy drive header and connect the pins to pull-up resistors.

I repaired the accessible tracks, rerouted the pull-up tracks and added a couple of wires at the old battery location so I, or the next owner, can put a battery holder in a sensible location and won't need to dismantle the entire machine if it's going to be stored for a long time. Floppy heads also cleaned.

One hexagonal tile.

#TilingTuesday

I'm not sure if it's my inability or unwillingness to sleep that keeps me up.

It might simply be that this time of day is most quiet and peaceful, and I don't want to waste it by sleeping through it. Not yet.

3am is my time.
