Does anyone know of a book on foundations of mathematics that takes computability as foundational rather than, say, set theory, or category theory?
My first inclination is to look at Greg Chaitin, but any other ideas?

I had never read the definition of Cybernetics... I always thought it was something like "computer touching for 1950s white guys" but it turns out its actually just systems dynamics/recursive/feedback systems? Who knew?
The purpose of a dog is what it does.
A factory in theory will make as much as needed so that the marginal cost of the last one is equal to the market price. At this point, they're making profits on the earlier products and breaking even on the "last" product produced...
But what if in fact as seen in data, the marginal cost goes down? Then the obvious thing would be to produce flat out, each one you produce makes you more profit... and so you run at or near maximum capacity full time...
So I was having a conversation with my son who is taking Microecon. He was, apparently, the only kid in the class who actually did the most recent assignment by making a mathematical model... Anyway we had the following discussion. In classic econ theory, the assumption is marginal cost to produce a good goes up with scale. To make the 1000th costs more than to make the 1st... This contradicts most empirical info, but it has the nice property that you can predict an equilibrium.

When the faculty of arts and social sciences at Sydney University conducted an internal survey, zero percent of staff – yes, zero – in one school agreed with the statement: “I trust the University of Sydney to act in the best interests of staff, students and the broader community.”

I don't think I've seen a more scathing review of the situation in higher education than this. Makes me cringe and say "surely it can't be that bad" even though I consider myself a horrible curmudgeon who sees universities as deeply flawed institutions equivalent to basically a hedge fund that teaches classes for tax reasons. Yet this is someone deep inside current universities, so they'd know more than I would I guess. Yikes!
OpenWrt does not use PHP, but it needs updates regularly as any connected device does. Fortunately their owut tool can do live upgrades for you. guix router can push latest stuff using guix deploy, but guixrouter is definitely for experts only.
This week has shown us that we are in a state of constant infowars online. If you're a techie, help your friends control their own network!
I always say "friends dont let friends run ISP provided routers". Look, its your network, and if the ISP controls the router then they can let anyone connect to your network. You think they can't respond to a FISA court order by allowing the NSA to have unlimited access to your LAN? get real. Anyway, my suggested plan of attack is OpenWrt on your consumer router, if it is supported... and if you need more than that, OpenWrt, or my #guixrouter on a VM on a mini PC.
It's time for Earth Wind and Fire...
Dear mastodon leftists. Do you know of a one or two book recommendation which my kid could read to provide an overview of american government and its discontents which might conceivably qualify as an american government class for high school?
in other words he has to learn the usual govt class contents... how the branches work, what the process is to make a law, what the govt Depts are etc... while maybe not accepting the high school propaganda version of the story? and not a masters thesis
We can SEE the real losses now in real time. The financial losses come when the game finally acknowledges that we've been fucking up. There can be YEARS between these two events. Also, the people who suffer the real losses are *us* the general people who pay more for food and electricity and personal computing equipment and such. Financial losses of the scale of what's coming will *always* be bailed out by transferring losses to the people, because *that's what states are for* they protect rich
It's important to keep very clear in your mind the difference between financial losses, and real losses.
Real losses occur when for example you run an AI datacenter and burn fuel and evaporate precious water and dedicate scarce chips and things to generating wrong answers to important questions and unmaintainable code.
Financial losses occur when at some point some third party holding a bond has the bond price drop to the floor when everyone acknowledges it's never getting paid off.
Which feels right to you?
Given the option to stay in high school or switch to independent study and take PCC classes and graduate next summer the answer was 100% clear to him... switch. So I will contact the CIS people and get him switched next semester. He uploaded the paperwork yo register for Winter session classes (English and world history). His big issue will be getting registered in the classes he wants. His reg date will be mid Nov.
Kid gave a report on his day auditing courses at PCC. Philosophy class really sparked his interest and he apparently even participated in class, got up and drew a diagram on the board... etc. Teacher was enjoying having him...
Psych class must have been moved to a different classroom because noone showed up at all... Microecon was kinda a bust for him... English class seemed good maybe not his favorite topic in this section but the format was good
None of this is wrong, but we still need to move forward in life and seek out beauty, knowledge, autonomy, truth, joy, music, cooperation... And I just dont know how to explain all of that to a 15 year old. most people really never even understand what hes already figured out. i literally said this about school in the parent group chat and one of the parents said something like "wow, I had never thought of that"
My younger kid has realized that school is at least in part, a prison where kids are kept so parents can be farmed by capitalists, and that the grading, testing, major, and degree system serves to normalize and perpetuate hierarchies of importance among people. Also that many people have no interest in the knowledge and only care about the signifiers of status.

My wife sent me that video, finally someone who is teaching the secret about modern music (ie. music since the 1700's or so). It's a scale that's uniform distances on a logarithmic scale for frequency (that is, every note is 2^(1/12) ~ 1.05946 times the frequency of the previous one).
The piano keyboard absolutely shatters the symmetry... You can get that symmetry back by creating a uniform keyboard:
