Does any #Fediverse software allow someone to restrict who can @ mention them? Or is that just generally fair game? If always allowed, is that a vector for pile-on-style harassment?
I just reported a post through #Mastodon software, I think for the first time. I was surprised as I was filling out the report, that it showed me a bunch of other posts from this account and asked me to check if those are also problematic. They were.
As I was checking off post after post of rule-violating content, I couldn't help but think: Isn't this a potentially very harmful thing to put someone through? Like, I saw some dick pics. It wasn't my idea of a good time but I won't think about it again. But what if I was reporting something really really bad someone posted? Something that really upset me. And then the report flow says, "here, are any of the following posts also extremely upsetting and possibly harmful to you?"
I am not a #MastoAdmin. I am not an expert in #moderation. I am not an expert in trauma. I am not an expert in mental health. So maybe I'm really off base, but to me this does not feel like a good idea. Does anyone else feel this way?
Anyway, thanks for coming to my brain dump. I apologize that it was a bit all over the place. I'd love to hear from people about any of the above.
I suppose I should also mention (if it wasn't obvious) that I'm not interested in ways for someone to become rich off of any of this. I'm just interested in finding ways to sustainably grow the Fediverse, which I believe includes people earning a reasonable wage for their work. (Of course if we want to talk about overthrowing capitalism I'm game but that's outside the scope of this thread)
I’ve come up with a small list of players for whom this may be a relevant conversation:
1. Developers
2. Communities (hosts, sysadmins, mods)
3. Artists/Writers/Creators
4. Businesses outside of 1-3
5. Anyone else?
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about #funding or #monetization and all the ways it pertains to the #Fediverse.
Before I begin, I want to acknowledge that so much of what is currently the Fediverse (software, community, etc.) has been led by volunteer efforts. I admire people who dedicate their free time to something they believe in. I also recognize that so many more people would love to contribute and yet are unable to due to various reasons.
Money/funding wouldn't necessarily enable every one of those people to contribute, but I think it would make a big difference for a significant number. And I think a more vibrant and sustainable Fediverse benefits us all.
