:vi_fon: new thing to hate about sloppy autocaptioning: automatic misgendering by ignoring the pronouns a person uses and substituting in different ones

:river_fon: once again asking what this means

:river_fon: tbh

I am not going to directly criticise the person in the talk or the people sharing it, because otherwise there are lessons in it to share, and the person clearly gets enough hate as-is and clearly is well-meaning

but I'm sick and tired of people in 2026 still saying shit like "female is a clinical term" or "people care about my genitals" as if this is how misogyny works

recently saw a post saying that TERFs are fascists, not feminists, and I honestly I strongly disagree

sure, if you use a reasonable definition of Actual Feminism, you're right, these are fascists, not feminists. but that also entirely defeats the point

the point is that radical feminists actually do think they're helping women. the worst of them may just be overt fascists at this point, but radical feminist ideology infects a lot of normal cis women who simply don't realise what they're doing

the point is that radical feminism gives easy answers to problems even if they are incorrect, at the expense of our trans and sex-worker comrades, and also our male comrades. it's much easier to say that men are rude to you because of your vagina and not because gender is more complicated than that and genitals are just one small part of that

it's much easier to say "female is a clinical term" than to acknowledge the linguistic tendencies of people specifically speaking English to use adjectives as nouns to demean people. "blacks," for example, is demeaning and clinical, but "Black" is still a valid adjective. it's harder to talk about the nuance of how "female colleagues" is more demeaning than "colleagues" (genderless) and this doesn't mean we need to start saying "woman scientists" even though "man scientists" is seen as nonsense

the point here is that most of radical feminism is the same bullshit liberal shit we've grown to hate: coming up with simple answers to complex problems which end up making things worse instead of helping. and the correct answer is to inject nuance rather than discard it

:river_fon: since someone will have properly saved it: what DIY HRT web resources are we using now since there were ones that got removed and new ones that got added

feel free to DM instead of public-reply

:vi_fon: switching to oestradiol injections has made me unfortunately aware of how dogshit our prescription infra is and how actively harmful to trans folks it is

like, might just need to switch to DIY injections if I want to get reliable access to shit

RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/117508713482320591

:clar_fon: ah, toot.cat doesn't federate with it, so, it can't actually work, makes sense

which admittedly is kinda weird since we don't even silence mastodon.social (it's unrestricted) but bsky.brid.gy is suspended and you can't even opt into interactions via it

admittedly this is one of the main mod decisions we disagree with here, since our opinion is to just block every unmoderated instance and eugen is 100% personally responsible for every connection severed as a result of mastodon.social being blocked

:clar_fon: decided to try brid.gy to link fedi account to AT since it's unlikely we will ever seriously be active on bsky

@clarfonthey @kae_bytheocean lisp cdr been better?

:vi_fon: belated remarks from someone whose opinions might be appreciated: the diff and associated story for the #PHP CVE fix makes a lot of sense coming from the perspective of helping #RustLang work on stabilizing custom allocators

like, even in a language that prides itself on explicitly specifying invariants and giving people the tools to reason about memory issues, allocators are such a minefield of potential subtle problems that it makes loads of sense that PHP had to effectively rearchitect a lot of things to fix this bug

like, just as a simple example, regarding the bug, this unsafe code guidelines issue was referenced from the Rust side about how reasoning about out-of-memory situations is incredibly subtle and even compilers can do it wrong sometimes

the point is, basically, the amount of work put in by the PHP team is incredibly commendable and it also is quite realistic that there are going to be bugs and headaches for weeks to come. sometimes they might even depend on the compiler doing weird things to your code that are technically wrong but were never realised until recently, and miscompiles are a special hell to experience as a developer, especially one who needs to make their code work under multiple compilers on multiple operating systems and CPU architectures

:vi_fon: that said maybe we should reevaluate the "it doesn't work" claim next time it matters

:vi_fon: paracetamol does not usually work because our pain tolerance is way too high but it does certainly help a lot for tooth pain

face feels like it's imploding still but now I can care a little less about it

:vi_fon: like we definitely have loads of auditory processing issues that mean that already people's words are difficult to understand sometimes

but phones just crank that up to 100 and that's why we hate them even more

:vi_fon: it is extremely frustrating that despite having phone calls that can have megabytes a second of throughput we're still compressing audio like the phone was just invented

not being able to understand people over the phone is like half of why I hate phone calls

:river_fon: cool talk about toxic shitposting

I dont fully agree that this has to mean detachment from social media but it is a pretty mature take

:vi_fon: so, trying to make some sense of Zed's vibe-catastrophe as part of Gram, and: https://codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram/issues/611

so, that's fun

:vi_fon: did mozilla test this at all

:clar_fon: cannot emphasise enough how awful it is to have to regularly take antihistamines because every surface or exposed piece of fabric in your own home has been covered at least one molecule of cannabinoid and this is completely out of your control because it's coming from the vents

:vi_fon: antiquated unix users: this is how the system is supposed to work. it does one thing (bash scripts) and it's trying its best
