#Alt4me please? Too hard on the phone, sorry!

A rather posh acquaintance has a 14yr old daughter at a local public school[1]. He texted her to ask when she'd be home. Her response was 'rr'.

When she returned later he asked her what that was about.

She explained that she had said 'rr' which is *obviously* "two 'r's", which *clearly* means "two hours".

So the posh kids seem to have evolved a version of text-speak for 'received pronunciation' 😀

1. NB for USAians, 'public school' here in the UK means 'private school'. I know, right?

...and apparently, Lord BinFace is going to 'win by a landfill' 😂 🤣

From The Other Place. Well done, whomever it was!

Ooo oo, where should one direct feature requests for the Mastodon standard WebUI?

What I would *love* is that when I click on 'bookmark' for a post, it asked me to choose or create a folder to put it in.

Basically, what I want to be able to do is organise my Masto bookmarks, like I can in my browser.

Good grief. I've loved my maths and sciency vids for a long time, but how have I never heard of this bloke before? He sounds like a total legend that I'd quite like to have a glass of wine with!

Edited to say, I did check their YT channel and while the audio might be auto-thing, the content appears to be their own.

Geeky Linux question, which is probably almost a newbie question but in years, I've never had the need to try this, so forgive me!

On my little local network, there's a laptop called 'garuda' and a laptop called 'server'.

Of course I can ssh from one to the other.

How would I get, on the 'garuda' machine, a proper 'remote desktop' window looking at the 'server' machine, so that I can open windows/apps on that, within this remote desktop?

My search foo is rubbish and only really came up with different tools for doing ssh, which is not what I'm after.

No idea where I'm going with this, but has anyone watched the movie "Ideocracy"? Short film, maybe 90 mins or so? I've never yet made it past about 32 minutes, because it is sooo 'stupid', (or should that be 'stoopid'?), but that is the exact point of the movie. It's like watching any US TV channel from anywhere other than the US right now.

OK, so I'm fishing for advice about this, which is largely going to boil down to 'a matter of opinion', so no fighting at the back there.

I'm old enough to have enjoyed the original Star Trek stuff, and I've watched most of the actual movies they made way back when.

Which of the TV series would you recommend for a dive down, one evening? I've got 'ST Voyager' which seems to have some good stuff ('Fun will now commence' was one gem I'd missed!) Which others might be worth a watch, do we think?

Found it! Here you go...

Call for a link please! I saw a meme thing a day or so back comparing a dozen or so languages, and on one side it had a rate in 'syllables per second', and on the other it had the same languages expressed as 'information content in bits per second'. Can't find it again, but it was interesting to me!

Did I do this yesterday? Forgive me, if so.

This popped up and grabbed me a bit. Good lyrics...

Okay, shared to me from Shitter, and right now I'm too tired to do other than auto-gen the alt-txt, sorry. But some of these are wonderful.

@thelinuxcast

Hi Matt, at some point, do you think we might have a video about Linux distros that avoid systemd? Mainly now because I'm starting to read that perhaps systemd has already been 'infected' by AI nonsense, alongside the other issues that people might have with it. Cheers, buddy!

(For completeness, I'm on Garuda, but happy to 'transition', as it were 🤔 )

OK, for an old-school coder geek, I think I'm being dim today. I'm encouraged to move away from Google, which is good, and I've done a fair bit of that. Next major hurdle will be email - I've had the same 'gmail' account for a couple of decades, so if I go to one of the EU alternatives I can foresee a long period of people failing to contact me, or accounts that no longer work. Are there 'easy' ways to mitigate this, do we know?

@thelinuxEXP

Hey Nick, I saw your 'annual review' of the Linux DEs the other evening, and that was interesting as always! Are you planning something similar for the Linux distros any time soon?

Well Bristol embarrassed the fash again. No surprise there.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c620gqr4y0po

"Avon and Somerset Police said 200 officers were drafted in to police the event, which saw around 40 members of Bristol Patriots and around 200 counter-protesters attend."

Completely peaceful, from what I saw. 3 arrested, but we don't know from which group.

@thelinuxcast

Hey Matt.

Just watched the short about Proton, and I completely agree - I would have switched to them in a heartbeat when I killed the 365 slop, except that there was no functional Linux app, even as a FlatPak or whatever.

FWIW, I ended up going with pCloud, which does seem to work although I had to jump through a few hoops to extract the appimage and then put stuff where it would be useful, then telling the OS where that stuff was and what to autostart.

Is there another vid there about cloud storage solutions, or has this all been done already?!

OK, very weird update.

I took the new big screen aside, and just plugged it into power. No data connections whatever. Once again, the lower 60% of the screen is gibberish and unusable. So maybe similar problems with two different monitors, and not just one laptop! Now that would be v weird.
