Just in case you need to keep your eclipses straight (original emoji joke credit to astronomer Katie Mack):

Solar eclipse: 🌎 🌑 ☀️
Lunar eclipse: 🌕 🌍 ☀️
Apocalypse: 🌏 ☀️ 🌕

Now THIS is how you respond to powerful people who are disingenuously “just asking questions” and “just bringing up concerns…”. Scientists have often tried to counter such things with mild mannered educational language which is apparently easily ignored. Apparently THIS is how you take them to school.

Questionable Musicals!

I confess that I am a fan of musicals, starting from my high school days in the Late Neolithic. (Rock opera?) Anyway, there are some musical numbers that have not stood the test of time - by modern standards, disturbing or worse.

Share songs from #musicals that would be considered horrible in the modern day! Some of mine:

* “Poor Jud is Dead,” Oklahoma - singer encourages someone to self-harm.
* “I’m an Indian too,” Annie Get your Gun - racist
* Quite a lot of Gigi…

I’m going to put this here so I can just link this post when I see unnecessary squabbles among my fellow lefties.

1. All struggles - for human rights, social and economic justice, sustainability, self-determination and more - are one struggle.
2. We can disagree on what the most effective tactics are, but keep in mind that maximum effectiveness probably comes from many people using many tactics, all valid.
3. Organized action is often very effective. Squabbles inhibit organization.

Keep in mind that what they do in Minneapolis, they plan to repeat in all cities in the U.S. Reposted with content warnings.

Oooh, an old favorite from my All The Folklore phase*. Thanks @gutenberg_org!

*Phase may recur at any time.

Just finished @annaleen ‘s book “Automatic Noodle” 🍜

My reactions:
a) fantastic characters, world building, and writing. 5/5
b) made me order lo mein 🥡 for lunch
c) gave me a hopeful vision of the future, not the far future like Star Trek but a future being built day-by-day amidst the catastrophes of climate change, viciously anti-social groups, and all that plagues us now. This is the kind of future we can start building right now (plus or minus actual robot sentience 🤖 ).

We all thought it was going to be some sort of Large Language Model or neural network code that would achieve sentience. It was NOT expected that a simple spreadsheet program would start deriving its own macros from first principles and realize, “These numbers don’t add up.”

Stolen from a friend, who stole it from Reddit, etc.

Perfect activity for a sunny summer afternoon.

So #Astrodon folks, I need a bit of help. I have an associate, fairly freshly minted PhD, currently in a postdoctoral position studying AGN in radio. They’re looking for a position, and U.S. positions (postdoctoral or permanent) are thin here. What new recruiting programs in Canada, Europe, Australia, etc. might they want to apply to?

Welp, I guess I volunteered to lead chants at a#NoKings event. Please drop ideas for good chants below!
