Looks like, if I move from Portland to Minneapolis, I’ll go from biking almost every day of the year (over 100˚ is a no) to ≈345.

Republicans haven't been able to get elected to office in Multnomah County since the '90s. So there aren't any, right? They all move away to some place where they can be relevant.
Nope! Ambitious Republicans like Ted Wheeler and Juila Brim-Edwards just changed parties. Younger reactionaries have joined the Dems from the start of their careers. They just have to adopt some basic liberal positions on social issues and style themselves as "moderates".

In early 2025 Rep Janelle Bynum (D-OR) was put on blast by Councilor Angelita Morillo for her vote for the anti-immigrant Laken Riley Act. Seems she’s still smarting from that.
“Angelita Morillo called Bynum’s vote in favor of the Laken Riley Act “an absolute betrayal to democratic values” in a video published across her social media platforms, noting Bynum was the only Oregon House or Senate Democrat to support the measure.”

If I were Tibetan or Uyghur, I’d be worried about the Chinese government. As a Usonian, I think people fomenting China-panic are just Cold War nostalgics who miss having a big, bad enemy to organize the country around.

But the genius local oligarchs forgot to register their Domain Name before they put it up on billboards! A supporter of Mitch Green noticed and registered it himself, and now it redirects to Green's campaign web site.

Right so, Facebook is all sad because people are calling their "AI" surveillance specs "Pervert Glasses" and it's killing them. It's also establishing the social norm that you don't go around with video recording glasses on your face, you'll be shunned.
So we need to start calling the Apple Watch the "Creep Watch" for humanity's sake.
On 11 Sep 2001, anyone with their head screwed on straight could see what was coming. Some were intimidated into silence — or worse, cooperation — by the jingoist rhetoric on their TVs. Remember the transparent attempt to intimidate into obedience that we saw when Charlie Kirk was killed? It was like that — a thousand-fold. But don't let anyone tell you there was unanimity. There wasn't.

The proposed measure that would have redirected 25% of the money in the Portland Clean Energy Fund to hiring more police has failed to obtain enough valid signatures to make it onto the ballot. The policemen’s union just wasted a lot of cash.
