They buried the lede. Many states have already ratified a constitutional amendment to make POTUS a nation wide popular vote instead of electoral college and enough states have flipped to blue so that the idea of getting this done before 2028 is not unrealistic. Now, that’s a story.

huge gap in my timeline between the trans people watching draconian anti trans laws pass in Washington and Colorado and all the liberals confidently assuring themselves that everything is good and normal again

A candidate can challenge the results on a county-by-county basis, by filing their intent with a particular county clerk to “examine” the contents of any county’s ballot box. But with 82 counties across the state of Mississippi, and nine days until the canvassing must be complete, “that’s beyond the scope of feasibility,” Griffith said.

From NBC News:

There is no mechanism for an election to undergo a recount under Mississippi state law. There is also no mechanism for a U.S. Senate general election race to be otherwise contested according to the Mississippi election handbook and state law.

Back in 1999-2000, my friend (middle, first pic) tried to launch a company focusing on BeOS-based computer systems targeted at media creators. Our small team went out to SIGGRAPH '99 in L.A. to hopefully kickstart it. Obviously, that didn't happen, but I did briefly meet Jean-Louis Gassée.

Anyway, it was fun to see a BeOS reference for the first time in ages. Thanks for that!

The leopards are eating each others’ faces. Love to see it.

I love this map of who voted to keep Sunset Dunes as a park. Everybody who doesn't live near the park, everybody who lives right next to the park, and then No votes from a bunch of people who claim to live next to the park but don't really.

I am trying not to make this up, but the usage of the apostrophe in modern (ok, in living memory) English to indicate possession is a before living memory instance of its regular usage as the marker of a contraction in spoken English compared to written English.

Back in the day, English had an honest-to-Goddess genitive case, with the -es ending. The pluralising -s is applied first: a cowes milk, the cowses barn.

The apostrophe replaces the e of -es for the singular and the whole of -es for the plural: a cow's milk; the cows' barn.

So what do you do with singular words which happen to end in s in the first place? Often but not always proper nouns, like bus or James or Idris.

You should see what you say. If you pronounce the possessive "Idris", write "Idris'". If you pronounce the possessive "Idrises", write "Idris's".

Presumptive House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats plan to reverse the Republicans’ $1.2 trillion cut to health care and will restore the Affordable Care Act tax credits.

Love, love this photo. James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa, the new U.S. Senator and Governor of Texas, celebrate at Whataburger after winning their respective races.

the happy mac / sad macs are hard coded into the rom. in the third pic is binary, maybe a lookup table, that i outlined in purple. the inside of the knits/back of the blanket is knit in birds eye jacquard, a smooth reverse side with a cross hatch of the colors on the outside. this series of vintage mac boot rom knits comes with source code to reproduce your part of your rom.

Hey Hakeem, I actually do want retribution. Retribution and consequences. I want that. That's why I voted for that. Dumbass.

There's a lot to be hopeful about last night for trans people, and one of the best results came in Alabama.

A transgender woman flipped a R+16 district running on bread and butter economic issues.

They underestimated her because of her gender identity.

Trans Democrat Allison Montgom...

Vote totals are still astonishingly close in Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi, and for Boebert’s House seats. Democrats lead in all but by a margin of a couple thousand to a few hundred votes. Counts may not be final for weeks.

Scott Colom is 2,100 votes ahead in the Mississippi senate race with over 95% of the vote counted. This was on nobody’s radar. Pollsters gave him an under 5% chance of winning. Mississippi hasn’t had a Democratic senator since John Stennis in 1989 (Stennis entered the Senate in 1947 when Southern Democrats were a racist party)
