Strangely enough the professor's personal ring had only one item attached to it, and I was soon to learn that it could serve as a kind of skeleton key which could unlock all the hitherto unknown mysteries of the universe, including even those secrets Man was never meant to know. The ring had affixed to it only one small strangely sculpted bit of grayish metal, and my mind recoiled in horror upon realization of that shape:
"4"

@dougmerritt hey Doug if youd be up for a call sometime let me know, ye of the diplomatic polymathery & ostensibly refined geekery!
@internic hey if you'd ever like to try brief call sometime let me know. (saw your like/boost of my post about it). I've done it with a few Fediverse folks here so far, been fun
its sad to see the #AI gullibility psychosis come for Torvalds too. had tons of respect for him prior
very much doubleplus ungood
modern website UI roundtrip latency (from user input event requesting new page to output finish of its fetching/rendering): anywhere from 2000 to 15000 ms, with p90 of say 4000 ms
BBS (equiv UX): anywhere from 15 ms to 1000 ms, with p90 of say 100 ms
"SECOND ONE, PLEASE, AND THANK YOU!"
(yes, anecdotal, but typical for me recently)

honestly, same
Mixed feelings on #AI bubble. Looking forward to the nauseating hype wave receding. Not looking forward to a crash of the US economy.
ssh BBS interaction in 2026 is a refreshing (jarring!) reminder of how horribly bloated and slow most modern web apps and native mobile apps are, by design.
lately I am interacting with a remote, cloud Linux VM-hosted, Golang-written ssh BBS and the roundtrip latency of the "user input -> UI response & rerender" cycle is lightning fast. Massively faster and more resource efficient than The Norm now.
